SAGITTARIUS, HIS BOOK: Gathered For John Archer By His Friends, Harry Miller Lydenberg, Deoch Fulton, Karl Brown, Paul A. Bennett, Frederic G. Melcher and George L. McKay. 1951.

1951. [xii], 94pp. Illustrated. Brown cloth.*A retirement memento for the long-time head of printing and publishing at the New York Public Library. John Archer supervised a shop of eighty workers, five Linotypes, four double-type frames, two stones, a half-dozen presses and complete bindery equipment. From the Library Printing Office came bookplates, forms, catalogue cards, newsletters, technical books and pamphlets, bibliographies, and the monthly 'Bulletin of the New York Public Library,' well known for its scholarly contributions. It is estimated that over forty years Archer and his Office produced the not unimpressive total of just over 500,000,000 pieces of printing. This was truly an era now gone with the wind: in the early 1980's all the press-room equipment was scrapped; the 'Bulletin', moribund for a decade, died out; staff news and other such jobs are done outside; scholarly bibliographical publication, not being cost-effective, is almost extinct.Designed by John S. Fass. With dedications by Paul A. Bennett to Prof. Ovink. - Prix : 100,00 €
